    Project Name:

Water Storage Tank Construction in the urban area of San Isidro municipality in the department of Choluteca

Project Location:

The submitted project will be implemented in the urban area of the municipality of San Isidro on the grounds of the kindergarten school building.

Performance Sectors

-Sector:  Social
-Sub-sector: Health and Education

Time Period for Project’s Implementation

Depending upon the availability of funds, the project will take 21 days to complete.  The project’s implementation has been divided into three stages:

    • Stage One:  Purchase and transport materials
    • Stage Two:  Construction
    • Stage Three: Completion of Construction
General Description of Project

The project consists of the construction of a water storage tank with the capacity of approximately 1,000 gallons.
The tank to be constructed will supply water to three public buildings in the urban area:

  • Kindergarten school building/ Municipal supervision of education building
  • Health Center
  • Basic Education Center

The majority of the population, which demands the services of education and health, visits these buildings.  These buildings which are intended to provide good service to the population need the permanent availability of good quality water.  The current water system is unable to meet the needs of the population.  For this reason, we present the proposal for this project in order to solve this water problem.

Justification

It is a crucial factor for quality of life that the population has good access to water and from this access the population’s personal hygiene will improve through this infrastructure.
Currently, these public buildings that offer services to the local population demand a large quantity of water and for the rest of the homes that already need water for:

  • Human consumption
  • Food preparation
  • Maintenance of the classrooms and offices
  • Cleaning of surgical medical equipment
  • Maintenance of sanitary toilets
  • Irrigation

Currently the water service is defective and it is not directly connected to the municipality’s system.  As these buildings are only given rations of water, they often have problems related to hygiene because there is no water to allow for sanitary toilets, the cleaning of the classrooms and the offices, and the cleaning of medical equipment.
With the construction of the tank, these three buildings will be secured with water 24 hours a day and therefore will eliminate the unhealthy conditions and problems that occur through this absence of water.

The following problems will be resolved through water access in these buildings:

Health

  • Reliability of water treated with chlorine
  • Reliability of an abundance of water for the use of sanitary toilets
  • Sufficient water for the maintenance of the floors and walls
  • Reliability of sufficient water for the cleaning of medical clothing and surgical tools
  • The ability for patients´ to wash their hands and bath themselves

Education

  • Reliability of water treated with chlorine
  • Reliability of an abundance of water for the use of sanitary toilets
  • Access to sufficient water for maintenance of the floors and walls
  • The ability to serve foods at the school
  • Reliability of water to irrigate the school ground’s gardens

.Beneficiaries

With the construction of this tank, providing 24-hour access to water, the following people will benefit:
-400 Students from the Basic Center
            -30 Students from the preschool
-400 Persons, which demand these services from the health center

Objectives

General Objective:  Provide permanent access to water in three public buildings in the municipality through the construction of a water storage tank.

Specific Objective:  Construct a tank that will hold 1,000 gallons of water and reconnect and make minor repairs to the tube system of the three buildings.

 Anticipated Impacts

In health and hygiene:
-Establish permanent access to water in the Basic Center, the kindergarten, and the health center
-Availability to water for human consumption and food preparation
-Provide the health center, Basic Center, and the kindergarten with better conditions for hygiene and sanitation.

In the environment:
-Availability to water for the irrigation of the gardens and planted trees on the basic center’s grounds.
-Availability of water for the implementation of agricultural plots of land.
